• A bug in the Collection-2 Vxx14IMGML monthly fire location production software caused the fire “Type” field to be set inconsistently for product versions 1 and 2. As a result, obvious type-2 (“other static land source”) hotspots were often incorrectly labeled as type-0 (“presumed vegetation fire”) hotspots. This bug was corrected in May 2025 and all VxxIMGML product files reprocessed to version 3.
  • NOAA's GOES-19 satellite replaced GOES-16 as GOES-East on 2025-04-07, and the data in FIRMS has been updated to reflect this change. Information on the replacement is available here .
  • The Non-NASA Filtered Geostationary Himawari active fire detections data available through FIRMS are now from Himawari-9.
  • Naming of satellites in FIRMS Attributes: To be consistent with the official naming of satellites, the following attributes have been updated as follows: N20 which refers to NOAA-20 (instead of 1 which referred to J1/NOAA-20); N21 which refers to NOAA-21 (and instead of 2 which referred to J2/NOAA-21).
